Business abandons Victoria under Andrews Government

New figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) confirm that Victoria is the only state or territory to have fewer businesses registered across 2022-23 compared with the previous year.

Across this period, Victoria had 7,606 fewer registered businesses, compared to 11,031 more in Queensland and 8,147 more in New South Wales.

Under the Andrews Government, Victoria is the highest taxing state in the nation and local businesses are being punished with higher payroll tax, higher WorkCover premiums and higher land tax.

Shadow Treasurer, Brad Rowswell, said: “It’s little wonder businesses are turning their backs on Victoria given the punishing conditions under Labor.

“The Andrews Government has sent Victoria broke and constantly resorts to raising taxes and charges which is driving businesses from this state.”

Shadow Minister for Small Business, Cindy McLeish, said: “The Andrews Government can’t keep blaming others for its actions.

“With almost 50 new or increased taxes since coming to office, we are seeing the real world consequences, with small business closing or relocating interstate.”
