Thousands more tonnes of green waste will be diverted from landfill each year after Council today resolved to expand the City’s green waste kerbside service eligibility to include up to an additional 9,000 rural residential properties.
The service was previously only available in urban areas.
“This is great news, not just for those residents who haven’t been able to access it previously, but also for our environment,” Mayor Tom Tate said.
“Last year more than 7,500 tonnes of green waste was collected as part of this service and turned into compost. We want to see that figure closer to 30,000 tonnes.”
Mayor Tate said for around $1 per week, residents in rural areas could benefit.
“We will be offering an incentive later this year where anyone with a green waste bin (from eligible properties) can get a free upgrade to a larger 360L recycling bin.”
This promotion, and the expanded green waste service, will be available later this year.
New areas within the suburbs of Bonogin, Currumbin Waters, Elanora, Gilston, Maudsland, Mudgeeraba, Nerang, Ormeau, Ormeau Hills, Pimpama, Reedy Creek, Tallai, Tallebudgera, Upper Coomera, Worongary and Yatala are being investigated for eligibility. Parts of Mt Nathan and Gaven may also be eligible.
The Green Waste Bin Service started in 2013 and has climbed to around 30,000 homes across the city.
