Local police to patrol during inaugural RunWest Festival in Western Sydney

NSW Police will be out in force tomorrow (Sunday 31 March 2019) as the inaugural ‘RunWest’ running festival kicks off in Sydney’s west.

Officers from Blacktown and Mt Druitt Police Area Commands will be patrolling the event footprint to ensure the safety and security of those participating in the community event.

Two courses will be in operation throughout the morning, with the 12km event starting at 7am from the Sydney Motorsport Park in Eastern Creek and finishing at Beames Avenue in Rooty Hill.

The 4km family fun run will start from the Blacktown International Sport Park at 10am and also finish on Beames Avenue, Rooty Hill.

Chief Inspector Bob Fitzgerald from Blacktown Police Area Command said road closures and special event clearways will be place for the duration of the event.

“Roads in Eastern Creek will begin closing at 6am, while roads in Rooty Hill will close from 3am. All roads are expected to reopen by 11.30am when the event concludes,” Ch Insp Fitzgerald said.

“Due to large pedestrian activity, police may restrict vehicle access along closed roads. This may limit access to local residents and businesses, so the community is urged to plan ahead to ensure their regular weekend activities are not disrupted.

“Special event clearways will also be in effect along the course, so check signage carefully when parking as vehicles left in clearways will be towed and fees may apply.

“Motorists are advised that detours will be in place while the Great Western Highway, between Doonside Road and the M7 Motorway at Eastern Creek, is closed from 7am until 8.30am.

“As this is the first time the event has been conducted in the area, local police have been working extensively with event organisers to ensure it is a success.

“For those participating in the running festival, public transport is your best bet. A free shuttle bus will be operating between Blacktown Railway Station to the Sydney Motorsport Park to get runners to the 12km event start line.

“For those running in the 4km event, a second shuttle will operate from Doonside Railway Station to Black International Sports Park,” Ch Insp Fitzgerald said.

Shuttle buses will also be in operation to get participants back to local train stations when the event concludes.
