National roadshow highlights India business opportunities

Australian businesses and exporters will have the chance to quiz trade and investment experts about opportunities to break into the India market from today, when a national roadshow kicks off in Sydney.

The Australia India Business Exchange (AIBX) India Market Updates 2022, hosted by the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade), will give exporters actionable market insights into the world’s fastest growing major economy.

Austrade’s General Manager, South Asia, Catherine Gallagher said India offers Australian goods and services exporters significant opportunities across education, agribusiness and food, technology, infrastructure, resources and energy.

“Australia’s reputation for quality goods and services – from agriculture, food, health and consumer products to technology, education and resources – is rapidly growing in India,” Ms Gallagher said.

“By supporting the Australian and Indian business communities to engage with each other, we hope to build on existing momentum and support commercial success.”

Ms Gallagher said the bilateral relationship was “at an all-time high” after the recent signing of the Australia India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement.

Peter Prentice, Managing Director of Agripower Australia Limited, a leading silicon fertilizer producer, will join the Sydney event to share his knowledge of the India market.

Since 2012, Agripower has worked across India collaborating with research institutions and the private sector to contribute to a market for agricultural products that improve farmers’ crop yields and quality, while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Agripower is a finalist in this year’s India Australia Business and Community Awards.

“India is an enormous and diverse market for Australian businesses. Agripower is not just working in the big Indian cities but spends most of the time working face-to-face with farmers to improve their lives,” Mr Prentice said.

“This provides Agripower with a very broad understanding of the nation’s food production and food supply at both business and personal levels. Key to our success in India is our local partners and working with professionals in the market. Austrade has been invaluable in helping us find and build these connections.”

The roadshow will run from 29 April until 29 June, with events in each capital city:

  • Sydney 29 April
  • Perth 11 May
  • Darwin 17 May
  • Brisbane 3 June
  • Adelaide 8 June
  • Hobart 15 June
  • Canberra 22 June
  • Melbourne 29 June

The Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement was signed on 2 April. Once in force it will see tariffs eliminated on more than 85 per cent of Australian goods exports to India (valued at more than $12.6 billion a year), rising to almost 91 per cent (valued at $13.4 billion) over 10 years.

India is the world’s largest democracy and one of the world’s fastest-growing major economy, with GDP projected to grow at 8.2 per cent in 2022-23.
