Help Protect Our Coastal Wildlife

There are currently no detections of H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu) in Victoria.

To support early detection and help protect local wildlife, residents are encouraged to report sick or dead birds and marine mammals, particularly along our coastline.

Bayside’s beaches attract many local and migratory bird species throughout the year. While H5N1 avian influenza has recently been detected in migratory seabirds in Western Australia, South Australia and New South Wales, there have been no detections in Victoria.

Community members can play an important role in monitoring wildlife health by reporting sick or dead animals via Agriculture Victoria’s online reporting tool.

What to report

  • Clusters of five or more sick or dead wild birds, of any species, anywhere in Victoria.
  • A single sick or dead:
    • seabird, waterbird, shorebird or bird of prey
    • marine mammal (such as a seal, sea lion or dolphin).

What to do if you spot a sick or dead bird or marine mammal

  • Do not touch or move the animal.
  • Keep your pets away.
  • Note the location.
  • Take photos or video from a safe distance if possible.
  • Report immediately via the online reporting tool.
