This 2020–21 spring/summer, Australia is experiencing a La Niña event with wetter than normal conditions expected across eastern and northern Australia.

In the event of La Niña taking place there will likely be high velocity storms, frequent heavy rain and heavier stormwater runoff in the street drains, waterways and outfalls.

Storms and heavy rains can have a big impact on your property, your neighbours and the wider community. We’re encouraging Peninsula residents to revisit or create your emergency plan and prepare your property in advance.

Remember, never wait for a warning to act. It is not always possible to predict where and when flooding will occur, especially flash flooding.

Here are some tips on preparing your property:

  • Keep up good maintenance of your roof by cleaning gutters, spouting and downpipes regularly, fixing loose tiles, roofing iron and ridge capping. This can prevent water collecting in your roof and causing it to collapse.
  • Ensure the runoff flows from your property is clear of any leaves or dirt that will block the internal and public drainage infrastructure.
  • If your property driveway crosses an open drain, clear out the culvert crossing under your driveway to prevent backup of runoff causing it to overflow onto your or your neighbours property.
  • Unplug appliances to prevent electrical shock when power returns.
  • Raise belongings by moving them to higher ground.
  • Tie down or bring in outdoor items.
  • Make sure your pets are inside.
  • Monitor conditions regularly.
  • Talk to your neighbours, family and friends to see what their plans are and talk about how you can help each other.
  • Ensure everyone knows where, how and when to turn off mains power, water and gas in case of emergency and evacuation.
