Police investigate thefts from motor vehicles

Detectives are investigating after a number of cars were damaged and broken into across Melbourne’s east and south-east in recent mornings.

It is believed at least 35 cars have been targeted by unknown offenders across the Glen Eira/Bayside, Stonnington, Kingston and Boroondara areas.

Of those, 17 were reported in Boroondara alone across suburbs including Hawthorn and Glen Iris.

In Malvern East, up to 12 cars were broken into by offenders about 4.30am this morning, including a number parked along Serrell Street.

Nine cars were also targeted in the Brighton and Bentleigh areas in the early hours of yesterday morning (10 April).

It is understood a number of items were stolen as a result of the break-ins.

Police are yet to establish whether the incidents are linked and are still working to determine what items were taken from the vehicles.

Boroondara Acting Sergeant Melissa Seach said police were taking the matter seriously, and has urged community members to speak up if they have information or noticed anything suspicious.

“It’s extremely disappointing that we have a minority of people in our community who feel they have the right to damage, steal and interfere with property that doesn’t belong to them,” Acting Sgt Seach said.

“Thefts from vehicles can often be opportunistic.

“A lot of the time, it can be prevented by taking simple measures, including ensuring vehicles are secured and all valuables removed from sight.

“We encourage car owners, where possible, to park their vehicles in a garage or in well-lit areas to deter thieves from engaging in criminal activity.”

Anyone with information on the incidents is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
